My opinion, or lack thereof, on OOXML + ISO

I've been reading the numerous and emotional blog posts about the newly approved and pending ISO standard OOXML crafted by Microsoft. Its all very interesting to me as I'm getting to learn more about topics I've never been exposed to before - like the standards process itself.

Emotionally I'm feeling like I want to side with those who are calling foul to the results. However, I don't know enough about the process or the impact these results will have to rationally opine a response. Based upon my experience with Microsoft software, I would expect the product to be low quality, full of bugs and security flaws, and nearly impossible to support. On the other hand, given Microsoft's performance as a for-profit company, they may be able to create more value for their shareholders as a result.

At any rate, the story is far from over and its taken me awhile to open my eyes up to the goings on, and I'm glad I'm finally paying attention to these important events.
